Everything You Need to Know About the Chattanooga, TN, Incline Railway

About the Chattanooga, TN, Incline Railway on Lookout Mountain

Since the end of the Civil War, visitors have flocked to Lookout Mountain to see the infamous battlefields for themselves. The Chattanooga Incline has been transporting visitors up and down Lookout Mountain for over 100 years to do just that. Today, the 1-mile-long track is commonly called “America’s Most Amazing Mile.” The trolley-style carts carry you up the mountain at 72.7% grade, making it the steepest in the world. You can enjoy the stunning scenery of Chattanooga’s peaks and valleys along the ride.

How the Incline Works

The Incline is a funicular railway, meaning the two railway carts counterbalance each other. As one cart ascends the mountain, another returns to the bottom of the track.

Things to Do in the Area

The attraction has two stops that allow visitors to deboard. You’ll find a station at the top of Lookout Mountain and another at the bottom near downtown Chattanooga. There are plenty of activities to do around each stop! At the top of Lookout Mountain, you’ll find Point Park, Civil War exhibits, and other attractions that are part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Don’t forget to stop by the observation tower as well to see the breathtaking panoramic views of Chattanooga!

There’s plenty more excitement at the lower station. Wander into the gift shop to find a wide selection of Lookout Mountain Railway souvenirs. You’ll also find some of downtown Chattanooga’s favorite restaurants, brewpubs, coffee houses, and shops all within a few blocks. If you’re looking for even more adventure, there’s also an indoor climbing wall just minutes away from the station.
