The Fascinating History

 

The history of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park shaped the future of the United States. Chattanooga, known as “The Gateway to the Deep South,” was a significant piece of land during the war. Soldiers spent over three months fighting in the Battle of Chickamauga and the Battles for Chattanooga. You can explore Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Moccasin Bend, and Orchard Knob to see where it all took place. 

Union troops eventually took control of Chattanooga. The victory became commonly known as “the death knell of the Confederacy.” These events proved to be a major turning point in the war, as well as in American history. Today, visitors can honor the lives lost through tours, monuments, and exhibits.

Tour Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park

Take a tour of some of the many historical landmarks in the area. Opt for a self-guided tour to roam the grounds yourself and check out the monuments. You can also attend one of the regularly scheduled tours led by a knowledgable park ranger. You’ll get to hear unique Chattanooga and Chickamauga battlefield stories and delve deeper into the history! They offer both driving tours and walking tours, as well. Depending on which you choose, your tour can last between 30 minutes and two hours. 

Hike Through Historic Battlefields

Visitors can choose from a wide variety of battlefields, which are great for hiking. There are over 80 miles of trails between the Chickamauga Battlefield and the Lookout Mountain Battlefield. Many of these follow historic roads that were around during the Civil War. You’ll be able to hike the very trails used by 1863 Union and Confederate soldiers! Stop by the visitor centers to view some great indoor exhibits and artifacts if you need a break from the sun. 

Explore Point Park on Lookout Mountain

Point Park on Lookout Mountain is a wonderful way to spend the day. If you are looking for panoramic views and an afternoon full of history, this is one stop you can’t miss. The park is full of historical markers that guide you to nearby memorials and paint a vivid picture of the events that happened in 1863.
